In his first public comments since the tabling of the Integrity Commission report into Prime Minister Andrew Holness’ statutory declarations, People’s National Party President, Mark Golding says the Prime Minister has only two options: resign or call fresh elections.
Golding made the comment at a media conference at his office on Thursday.
Chevon Campbell tells us more.
Since the tabling of the Integrity Commission’s report on Mr. Holness’ Statutory Declarations on Tuesday, more questions than answers have been raised from the document.
Fundamentally, Mr. Golding believes there’s enough to suggest that the Prime Minister may have misled the country when he was asked whether he knew which parliamentarians were being probed for illicit enrichment.
Mr. Golding says along with other key findings by Director of Investigation’s Kevon Stephenson, render Mr. Holness’ as head of government untenable.
The Integrity Commissioners have supported Stephenson’s recommendation that the matter be transferred to the Financial Investigations Division and Tax Administration Jamaica for further probing.
This, they say, is a requirement for any finality to be achieved.
The Opposition Leader says in order for such investigations to be carried out with transparency, Mr. Holness must step aside.
He says the Prime Minister’s only other option is to immediately call elections and leave it to the people of Jamaica to decide.
Meanwhile, Opposition Spokesman on Justice, Senator Donna Scott Motley, says it should be clear to Mr. Holness that he must step aside.
Mrs. Scott-Motley says Mr. Holness must abide by his own principles.
