PORT-AU-PRINCE—The rise in acts of violence in the Haitian capital is worsening the food situation for several hundred thousand Haitians. The latest study from the National Coordination of Food Security (CNSA), published on March 22, confirms this trend. According to the study, more than 240,000 more Haitians have fallen into the food emergency phase. This brings the number of Haitians to 1.64 million and 4.97 million in food insecurity phases 3 and 4, respectively.
Haiti’s hunger crisis has worsened due to escalating gang violence at the beginning of the year. An update of the integrated food security framework, published on March 22 by the World Food Program (WFP), shows an increase in the number of Haitians experiencing food insecurity. This study also shows a deterioration in the food conditions of a significant population segment compared to the estimates made in August 2023. This projection concerns the period from March to June 2024. Around 532,000 more Haitians find themselves in a dire situation as it relates to daily food needs.
