Retired policeman, Fitz Bailey, has been appointed deputy commissioner of police in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Fitz Bailey retired from his post as deputy commissioner in the Jamaica Constabulary Force, JCF, in charge of the crime portfolio on September 7, 2024. He had served in the JCF for more than 40 years.
Bailey will arrive in Turks and Caicos on October 6, 2024 ahead of starting his new role the following day for an initial period of six weeks.
In 2022, there were 34 murders in Turks and Caicos – a record high for the country. There are fears that 2024 could be more bloody with 32 murders committed so far this year.
Local reports have pegged the escalation of violent crime to gang feuds in the country.
Bailey will be expected to use his wealth of experience dismantling gangs like the Klansman gang, Kings Valley gang and Uchence Wilson gang in Jamaica to halt the flare-up in Turks and Caicos.
Bailey is also versed in crime prevention and public safety.
The long time lawman holds a Master of Science in Psychology and Criminal Investigation from the University of Liverpool, a Master of Science in National Security and Strategies from the University of the West Indies, Mona and an Associate Degree in Accounting from the Management Institute of National Development.
He’s also been awarded the Order of Distinction in the Rank of Officer (OD) in Jamiaca.
The 60-year-old Bailey will work closely with Commissioner Edvin Martin, who went on leave on October 1.
Bailey’s appointment has been endorsed by Governor Dileeni Selvaratnam.
