The video was captured on 29 November 2020, when Museveni warned protesters after the arrest of Bobi Wine.
A post on X (formerly Twitter) with a video claiming to show Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni warning youth ahead of the anti-corruption demos set for 23 July 2024 is FALSE.
“In Uganda, it is unthinkable that the youth can hold peaceful protests. They have received an early warning prior to their 23rd July March to Parliament,” the post accompanying the video reads.
In the 28-second video, Museveni says: “It was definitely a miscalculation for the schemers to imagine that they can use such anti-people techniques in a country led by the original National Resistance Army. You make such a miscalculation you do so at your own risk. I can assure you of that whoever you are.”
This video was posted on 1 July 2024, amidst discussions and calls to join the planned ‘March to Parliament’ anti-corruption protest. According to social media users, the protest will be held on 23 July 2024. A similar video was posted here and on TikTok.
PesaCheck conducted a Google reverse image search to establish whether Museveni issued the warning in 2024. The search results led to a post shared on Facebook on 4 May 2022. The post’s author states it is a video “from the recent past”.
The same search results led to updates by media institutions in Uganda showing that the President issued the warning on 29 November 2020, in Mbale after protests in different parts of the country.
The protests were sparked by the arrest of then presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine.
A keyword search to confirm whether Museveni had issued a warning against the planned 23 July 2023 protests did not yield credible results.
PesaCheck looked into a post on X with a video purportedly showing President Yoweri Museveni warning against the anti-corruption protests set for 23 July 2024 and found it to be FALSE.
