Former Chippa United coach Luc Eymael has weighed in on Hugo Broos’ goalkeeping selections for Bafana Bafana, suggesting there is little separating the country’s top shot-stoppers in terms of quality.

Both Eymael and Broos hail from Belgium and have extensive experience working in African football. 

“The goalkeepers have been selected from Sundowns, Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, and now you also have Ricardo Goss, who has always been there,” Eymael said.

“Most of the time Goss has been part of the squad, along with (Sipho) Chaine and Ronwen Williams. We know Ronwen’s quality already. Normally, it was not the Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper (Brandon Petersen) who was in the top three, it was usually Goss.

“But perhaps one day he can give the Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper an opportunity because, for me, there is not a big difference in quality between the Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper and the goalkeeper of Siwelele.”

On Thursday, the South African Football Association confirmed that Broos had named a 32-man preliminary squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup preparations.

The squad will assemble in Johannesburg on Monday, 25 May, although the Mamelodi Sundowns FC contingent and overseas-based players will join later due to club commitments.

Sundowns are set to face AS FAR in the second leg of the CAF Champions League final in Morocco tonight.

Broos is expected to trim the squad down to a final 26-man group on Wednesday, 27 May, during an announcement at the Sefako Makgatho Presidential Guest House in Pretoria.
