The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) hopes for Namibia’s entry. This is what emerged from the statements released by the general secretary of OPEC, Haitham al Ghais, during his speech at the international energy conference opened today in Windhoek, the Namibian capital.
In a pre-recorded message broadcast at the conference and quoted by “Arise TV”, a London-based channel owned by the Nigerian tycoon Nduka Obaigbena, al Ghais expressed enthusiasm for potential collaboration with Namibia and affirmed OPEC’s willingness to assist the southern African country in its oil efforts.
The OPEC secretary then highlighted the importance of Namibia’s oil and energy resources in meeting future demand and encouraged potential investors to explore the many opportunities available in the country. After the loss of Angola, which left OPEC in January contesting the decision to impose a production cut of 70 thousand barrels a day in favor of the United Arab Emirates, Namibia would have the potential to become Africa’s fourth largest oil producer within the next ten years.
