More students have shown improved performance in the Grade 4 Primary Exit Profile, PEP4, examinations this year compared to last year’s cohort.
In a statement today, the Ministry of Education says improved performance was registered in Mathematics, Language Arts and the Numeracy and Literacy Performance Task components of the exam.
Robian Williams tells us more.
A total of 33,540 students sat the PEP4 exams this year.
This included Language Arts and Literacy on June 19, and Mathematics and Numeracy on June 20.
In Mathematics, almost 39% of students achieved proficiency or higher.
That’s a notable increase from 32% in 2023.
Similarly, 44% of students reached proficiency or higher in Language Arts, up from almost 39% last year.
The Education Ministry says it will release the results of the PEP4 exams on Thursday, October 10.
In addition to improvements in proficiency, there has also been an increase in students achieving mastery in the Numeracy and Literacy Performance Tasks.
This year, just over 65% of students achieved mastery in literacy. This is a slight improvement from the almost 65% in 2023.
In Numeracy, 70% reached mastery, up from 63% last year.
The Education Ministry says special accommodations were made for 355 students, including extra time, assistance from prompters or scribes, preferential seating, and linguistic aides for non-native English speakers.
Additionally, the exams were administered to five students who were hospitalized.
Education Minister, Fayval Williams is commending the students, teachers, and parents for their collaborative efforts in driving the success of this year’s PEP4 results.
She praised the students’ achievements, saying, “Our students have shown remarkable growth in this year’s PEP4 results, reflecting their hard work and determination.”
