General Secretary of the People’s National Party, Dr. Dayton Campbell, says any concerns surrounding Opposition Leader, Mark Golding’s dual citizenship, should be addressed through the current Constitutional Reform process.
Dr. Campbell is reacting to Prime Minister Andrew Holness’s assertion that dual citizens should not be allowed to lead the country.
He says the position adopted by Mr. Holness is a violation of the country’s constitution.
Shaloy Smikle tells us more.
According to Prime Minister Holness, he’s not against individuals with dual citizenship constituting the Parliament.
However, he believes once that individual aspires to lead the country, for them to remain a dual citizen is not just untenable but is also incurable.
But Dr. Dayton Campbell says the Opposition Leader is not obligated to follow the opinion of Mr. Holness.
A report from the Constitutional Reform Committee, CRC, was tabled in the House of Representatives on Tuesday.
It does not expressly recommend that a dual citizen be barred from serving either in the nation’s Parliament or as Prime Minister.
The report simply recommends that Jamaican citizenship should be the essential qualifying citizenship criterion for membership in Parliament..
Dr. Campbell says wider consultation should be pursued on the topic with greater input from the Jamaican people.
However, he rejects what he calls mere assertions from the Prime Minister as the basis of legislative reform.
