The Daures Green Hydrogen Village in Namibia is currently 80% complete and is anticipated to commence production of green hydrogen, ammonia, and green tomatoes by July, as stated by Obeth Kandjoze, Chairperson of Namibia Green Hydrogen. During its pilot phase, the project aims to produce approximately 100 tonnes of green ammonia annually and over 400 tonnes of green tomatoes. By 2030, Daures aims to scale up production, potentially exporting up to 700,000 tonnes of green ammonia.
Among the four Green Hydrogen projects in Namibia, Daures is making significant progress and is poised to become the first to begin full-scale operations. Kandjoze noted that as of November 2023, the project has provided employment to over 200 Namibians, with a focus on engaging more than 30 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), many of which are situated in nearby communities.
Highlighting the socio-economic significance, Kandjoze emphasized that a large portion of residents in the area live on less than US$1 per day. He shared these insights during the Green Hydrogen Symposium, which concludes tomorrow, underscoring the positive impact of the €40 million Joint Communique of Intent (JCoI) agreement. This agreement has facilitated the commissioning of Green Hydrogen pilot projects, particularly in the Erongo Region, generating around 300 jobs.
Additionally, Namibia is advancing its efforts in green hydrogen technology through initiatives like the Hyrail Namibia Green Hydrogen Dual Fuel Locomotive pilot project. This year, the project is set to commence the dual conversion of locomotive engines to use both green hydrogen and diesel, with an expected commissioning date in mid-2025. Spearheaded by TransNamib, Hyphen Technical, and CMB Tech, with the University of Namibia (UNAM) as an academic partner, the project aims to advance Namibia’s capabilities in the green hydrogen sector.
Through the JCoI, approximately N$100 million has been allocated to award scholarships to 183 individuals, enabling them to acquire the necessary skills to capitalize on emerging opportunities in the green hydrogen sector.
