CBL: Cyberattack contained, investigations ongoing with no signs of impact on customer accounts

The Central Bank of Libya (CBL) announced that some of its systems and technical services were targeted by a cyberattack, stressing that its cybersecurity teams detected the incident immediately and responded in accordance with approved emergency response and business continuity plans. CBL said the affected systems were isolated and the necessary technical measures were taken to mitigate any potential impact.

In an official statement, CBL said its technical teams, in cooperation with international cybersecurity experts and specialized firms, are continuing investigative and forensic analysis efforts to determine the nature, scope, and potential consequences of the incident. Work is also underway to restore affected systems and services while ensuring the continuity of the bank’s core operations.

The statement noted that cyber incident investigations require sufficient time to gather and analyze evidence before reaching definitive conclusions. It added that major financial and government institutions around the world have needed varying periods of time to complete investigations and identify the necessary corrective measures following similar incidents.

CBL emphasized that there are currently no confirmed indications that customer accounts, balances, or data have been affected, although verification and technical assessment processes remain ongoing. It added that the impact was limited to a small number of systems, which are being gradually restored, while all other services continue to operate normally, including bank card services, the LYPAY platform, and other operational services.

CBL stressed that safeguarding the stability of the financial system and the integrity of information remains a top priority. It reaffirmed its commitment to taking all necessary measures to ensure business continuity and strengthen cybersecurity and protection mechanisms, while pledging to keep relevant authorities and the public informed of any confirmed developments or findings once they are officially verified.
