5th T20 Match: RESULT
- Tanzania 92/9
- Uganda 93/4
- Tanzania won by 6 wickets
Baby Victoria Pearls finished their training tour against Tanzania on a high with a six-wicket victory in the final T20 match.
Both teams are preparing for the U-19 World Cup Qualifiers next month and used the tour as an opportunity to try out different team combinations.
In the final T20 match, Tanzania won the toss and elected to bat first. The key to winning the fourth T20 was a strong top-order partnership that anchored the batting but a quick loss of wickets hurt their batting today. The hosts never let the visitors settle picking up wickets in regular intervals to limit Tanzania to 92/9 in their 20 overs.
In the run chase, Uganda managed to get a strong opening stand between Captain Jimia Mohammad (25) and Patricia Timong (15) worth 40 runs that anchored the run chase.
Despite losing three wickets in quick succession, the experienced pair of Malisa Ariokot (13) and Immaculate Nandera (17) closed out the game with 20 balls to spare.
Uganda timed their run chase well and made sure they scored runs at a good rate to make sure they didn’t run out of resources at the back end.
A great series for the sides as they sized themselves up, with solid lessons for both sides. Uganda will need to work on their fielding and fitness but also importantly work on their batting combinations, especially the opening partnership. They have tried three different combinations at the top of the order and hopefully, the series has helped the technical team to decide on their preferred pair.
Akurut Asumin has been the stand-out player for the hosts. She starred with both bat and ball and was also exceptional in the field. Patricia Timong was also good in some games and if she is consistent enough she can hurt opponents, Malisa Ariokot showed good experience with the bat anchoring the middle order well and she will be a match winner for Uganda at the qualifiers. Nabulime Gringish, Irene Mutoni and Mitchel Ariago who were featured for the 1st time at this level made a great impression and the experience of playing at this level helped them deal with the nerves at the qualifiers.
Two years ago Tanzania failed at the last hurdle despite being everyone’s favourite to win the tournament in Botswana while Uganda finished fourth in the competition. Two years later both sides have started preparations early to make sure they nick the one slot for the rest of Africa at the World Cup next year.
