In a move to facilitate smoother diplomatic relations, Gambia and Azerbaijan have inked a significant pact, eliminating visa requirements for diplomatic passport holders traveling between the two nations.
The agreement was announced following a meeting between Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister, Jeyhun Bayramov, and his Gambian counterpart, Dr Mamadou Tangara, VisaGuide.World reports.
During the meeting, several bilateral and multilateral issues of common interest were also discussed, marking a step towards fostering stronger ties.
Through a post published on X (formerly Twitter), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan noted that the recent diplomatic dialogues have emphasized the mutual desire to expand cooperation in various sectors.
The Ministers had an extensive discussion on perspectives of bilateral cooperation between Azerbaijan and Gambia.
Visa-Free Travel Agreement to Boost Tourism Between Azerbaijan & Morocco
This week, Azerbaijan and Morocco also agreed to waive visas for ordinary passport holders from both nations.
Under the new rules, citizens possessing valid ordinary passports from Azerbaijan and Morocco can now travel freely between the two countries for tourism purposes. By eliminating the need for visas for ordinary passport holders, both nations are expecting a surge in tourist flows, thereby boosting their respective tourism sectors.
On May 4, 2020, during a summit themed “United against COVID-19,” diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Gambia were discussed. In this regard, The Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, Mamadou Tangara and the Azerbaijani President and Chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), Ilham Aliyev, addressed the issue of COVID-19.
Educational grant programmes have been established in the preparatory courses (in accordance with the language of instruction) and in the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral programmes, as well as on basic and residency levels of higher education for the citizens of OIC Member States and for the citizens of the NAM Member States.
Azerbaijan Grant Programs on Gambian Students’ Education
In the academic years 2018-2019, a total of 40 citizens (14 individuals per program) from 14 OIC countries and 15 NAM countries were awarded educational grants to study in higher education institutions in Azerbaijan. Presently, Gambian citizens are participating in educational grant programs in Azerbaijan.
As of May 2024, the Azerbaijani passport is ranked 123rd globally. According to the VisaGuide Passport Index, people with this passport can go to 37 countries without a visa. However, other countries need to get a visa in advance.
