Defending champions of the COSAFA Cup, Zambia revived their title defense hopes with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Comoros that saw them move to second place in Group B behind Malawi on Sunday afternoon at the King Zwelithini Stadium.
The reigning champions suffered defeat in their opening match against Malawi in their opening fixture and came into the clash against the islanders desperate for a result to keep their title defense hopes alive.
Two second half goals by Fredrick Mulambia and Albert Kangwanda meant Chipolopolo were back in contention and regained a fighting chance of advancing further in the competition to defend their title.
Meanwhile, group leaders, Malawi who were fresh from their confidence boosting win over the defending champions further extended their lead in the group with a convincing 2-0 victory over Seychelles to maintain their lead at the top.
Two second half goals by Lanjesi Nkhoma and Jacama Kumwembe meant the Flames are now on six points with just a game to go before securing a place in the semi-finals.
In other weekend fixtures, tournament hosts, South Africa went top of their group after a 2-1 victory over Botswana on Saturday, while Eswatini overcame last year’s silver-medalists, Namibia with the same scoreline in the earlier Group A fixtures.
The COSAFA Cup continues on Monday with the second round of Group C fixtures at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu.
Angola face Mauritius in the 13h00 GMT fixture before the Mambas of Mozambique face off against Lesotho in the 16h00 GMT kick off.
The top finishers of the three groups gain automatic qualification to the semi-finals, with the best second place finisher getting the last spot to make the last four.
