Government Minister, Daryl Vaz, says he’s prepared to take legal action against the People’s National Party, PNP, which he says has once again attempted to defame and malign his character.
Minister Vaz was responding to a statement from the PNP on Thursday which sought to affirm the party’s position in selecting Isat Buchanan as caretaker for East Portland.
Mahiri Stewart reports.
Isat Buchanan previously served time in prison in the United States, after being convicted twice on drug charges.
But, the Jamaica Labour Party says Buchanan’s selection indicates that the PNP has no moral authority to speak on crime, corruption or ethics.
However in hitting back, the PNP accused the ruling JLP of hypocrisy and political opportunism on the matter of rehabilitation.
The PNP further named two individuals as examples of, what it says, is the JLP’s history of embracing individuals with a troubled past.
One such individual is Minister Vaz.
The PNP noted that in 2021, Minister Vaz had his visa reinstated with a rare discretionary waiver.
It says the matter however, has faced no scrutiny by government members.
The PNP says the situation highlights a troubling double standard.
But in a post on social media platform, X, Minister Vaz says he has referred the PNP’s statement to his lawyers.
The Minister also posted photos of two US visas, one diplomatic and the other a B1/B2 10-year visa.
Minister Vaz says both visas were reinstated and cleared in September 2021 and 2022 respectively.
