The leadership of the world’s multi-lateral institutions has joined local leaders in praising Dr. Nigel Clarke’s elevation to Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, IMF.
The Fund’s managing director, Kristalina Georgieva, announced Clarke’s appointment shortly after 10 Monday morning.

The IMF’s managing director announced to the world on Monday that Jamaica’s Nigel Clarke would join the leadership ranks of one of the world’s most powerful financial institutions.
Ms. Georgieva says Dr. Clarke is an exceptional public servant with proven leadership in institution building and crisis management. She says Clarke has stewarded Jamaica to a stronger economic position.
Several leaders of the world’s multilateral immediately agreed with her. The announcement was met with almost universal praise.
Writing on X, Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley, praised Dr. Clarke’s appointment as a testament to the talent within the Caribbean region.
She says Clarke’s appointment sets a powerful example for the people of the region.
President of the Inter-American Development Bank, Ilan Goldfajn, described Dr. Clarke as one of the most successful and experienced policymakers in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Mr. Goldfajn says Dr. Clarke will be a great asset to the IMF.
In congratulating Dr. Clarke on his elevation, vice-president of the World Bank Latin America and the Caribbean Region, Carlos Felipe Jaramillio, says the finance minister has been an invaluable partner of the Bank.
He says executives at the World Bank are excited to continue working with Clarke in his new role.
Vice President of the International Financial Corporation, IFC, Alfonso Garcia Mora, described Clarke’s appointment as a great choice. The IFC is a subsidiary of the World Bank group.
Paraguay’s Minister of Economy and Finance and the former head of the country’s central bank, Carlos Fernandez, says Clarke’s elevation stresses the increasing role of Latin America and the Caribbean in designing solutions to address global economic, social, and environmental challenges.
On the local scene, former opposition leader and finance minister, Dr. Peter Phillips, congratulated Dr. Clarke on his appointment.
The former finance minister says Clarke’s appointment is testament to his own achievement and will provide Jamaica and the Caribbean with a welcome resource as the region continues to strive for sustainable economic growth. Several Jamaicans described Dr. Phillips’ message to Clarke as statesmanlike.
Jamaica’s ambassador to Washington, Audrey Marks, has also praised Clarke’s appointment.
