Executive Director of Jamaicans for Justice, JFJ, Mickel Jackson, is rubbishing statements by the Montego Bay police that a difficulty securing jurors is the reason for delays in the Mario Deane trial.
Jackson contends that the police is abdicating its role in the matter.
Nora Gaye Banton tells us more.
On the scene of a protest mounted by JFJ and members of Deane’s family near the Barnett Street Police Station on Wednesday, Commanding Officer for the St. James Division, Superintendent Eron Samuels said identifying eligible jurors is a challenge across the parish.
But Miss Jackson says that should be no excuse as moving the trial to Kingston is an alternative.
August 6 marked the tenth anniversary of Deane’s death.
He was severely beaten while in custody at the Barnett Street Police Station, and died in hospital three days later.
Deane had been arrested for possession of a ganja spliff.
Three Constables, Elaine Stewart, Juliana Clevon and Marlon Grant, are before the courts on manslaughter charges in relation to Deane’s death.
They are also charged with misconduct in public office and perverting the course of justice.
Two other men have been sentenced after pleading guilty to manslaughter.
The case is set to be called up in court again on November 18.
The JFJ executive director insists that the trial must begin then.
