There are 10,000 customers of the Jamaica Public Service Company, JPS, that are still without power in communities across the island, 41 days after the passage of Hurricane Beryl.
In an update on its power restoration efforts sent to media houses this afternoon, JPS says despite this number, it has delivered on its promise to reconnect a certain number of its customers to the power grid by August 12.
JPS says apart from St. Elizabeth, work to restore power to customers has been stalled due to access issues.
Shaloy Smikle reports.
The light and power company says it has 692,000 customers.
Of that number, it says power has been restored to 682,000.
That leaves 10,000 of its customers still without electricity.
JPS had already noted that customers in St. Elizabeth will have to wait 18 more days before power is fully restored.
But, excluding St. Elizabeth, JPS says restoration efforts have been stalled in other affected parishes.
These are Westmoreland, Manchester, and rural St Andrew.
The light and power company says its team has not been able to access locations in those three parishes due to landslides, blocked roads, damaged bridges and dangerous terrain.
It says it will continue to work with the local representatives and the National Works Agency to gain access to these areas.
JPS says that having restored power to the rest of the island, it will now focus on expediting full restoration in St. Elizabeth.
The utility company is also urging customers who are still without power or those who are experiencing outages due to unique circumstances to contact them.
They may be reached at the myJPS Mobile App or the Customer Care Centre at 888-225-5577 or 888-935-5577.
