German Michael Nees was named coach of struggling Zimbabwe on Tuesday by the national football association.
“We chose Michael because he has a deep knowledge of the African football landscape,” Zimbabwe Football Association caretaker boss Lincoln Mutasa told reporters in Harare.
It will be the third time the 57-year-old has coached a national team in Africa after one-year stints with the Seychelles and Rwanda.
Nees inherits from acting coach Jairos Tapera a team lying last in a 2026 World Cup qualifying group with just two points from four matches after defeats by Lesotho and South Africa last month.
Before World Cup elimination fixtures resume next March, Zimbabwe will play five-time champions Cameroon, Namibia and Kenya twice each in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations mini-league.

Ranked 124th in the world, Zimbabwe have been barred from international football twice recently for failing to play a former coach, Brazilian Valinhos, and due to government interference.
