Chief Financial Officer at the Jamaica Public Service Company, JPS, Vernon Douglas, says approximately 60 per cent of its 692,000 customers will benefit from the recently announced 20 per cent discount on electricity bills.
The light and power company made the decision to provide the discount to more than 300,000 residential customers. This, amid public backlash about its plan to issue estimated bills to some consumers for the June-to-July cycle.
Robian Williams tells us more.
The 20 per cent discount will be provided to JPS residential customers who use 150 kilowatt per hour of electricity or less for the month.
Speaking during Nationwide at Five on Tuesday, chief financial officer of JPS, Vernon Douglas, says this discount will be applied to current charges and will be reflected on bills customers will start receiving in August.
The light and power company stopped short of reneging on its previous announcement to give estimated bills to customers for the June/July period.
Mr. Douglas says approximately 236,000 of its customers will receive estimated bills. He notes that the majority of them are located in western parishes.
Mr. Douglas adds that despite the negative criticism, JPS has relaxed payment and collection terms.
And as for late fees.
Meanwhile, Mr. Douglas is defending the JPS in light of suggestions that the company is presenting misleading data about its success in restoring power to communities worst affected by Hurricane Beryl.
Energy Minister Daryl Vaz has suggested that updates provided by the JPS about its restoration efforts is inaccurate and incomplete.
But Mr. Douglas believes the sentiment is fed by how the data provided by the JPS is interpreted.
