Carlow and Old Leighlin basketballer, Amy Dooley, has been selected on the Irish senior team for two games against Uganda later in the month.
Irish coach, James Weldon, announced the team last week which will play against Uganda the 58th ranked side in the world in Keltern Dietlingen, near Karlsruhe on Sunday 21st July and Monday 22nd July. It is a build-up for Ireland’s next FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2025 qualifying window in November.
“I am delighted now,” said Amy who has been keeping herself in trim since the season ended.
“I do my own bits in Old Leighlin hall. I am also playing a bit of football which is keeping me fit. I go to challenge matches in Dublin.” The Carlow sports star has been working toward this for nearly two years now. Her selection sees her play alongside some of Ireland greatest ever basketballers. She was in France when she received an e-mail confirming her selection and the team go into training camp on July 17th.
When they come back they play The Netherlands on the first weekend of August which is the same Sunday as the All-Ireland JFC final. She will be hoping her county will be in Croke Park as she has played against and with so many of that Carlow football team.
In the meantime, the Irish basketball team are fit, healthy and ready to go.
“We have had a few injuries but they are all back now. We have a good panel going. We all know each other from playing Superleague. I know a lot of the players and have played against Enya (Maguire), Claire (Melia) and Sorcha (Tiernan).
“It has been like that for a few years now. There are a good group of girls who are playing National League. We know how to get on and play as a team.” Full Squad: Enya Maguire (Unattached), Annalise Murphy (The Address UCC Glanmire), Sorcha Tiernan (FloMAX Liffey Celtics), Lauryn Homan (Gurranabraher Credit Union Brunell), Kate Hickey (SETU Waterford Wildcats), Mimi Clarke (Pyrobel Killester), Bridget Herlihy (Ensio Lugo, Spain), Áine O’Connor (FloMAX Liffey Celtics), Claire Melia (Uni Ferrol, Spain), Abigail Rafferty (Ulster University), Amy Dooley, (The Address UCC Glanmire), Alex Mulligan (Ulster University).
