The government’s decision to sign a $150 billion Samoa Deal has sparked controversy due to claims of an LGBTQ clause. Reports suggest that the agreement includes provisions requiring underdeveloped and developing nations to support LGBTQ rights as a condition for receiving financial and other forms of aid from advanced countries.
Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, said the Samoa Agreement, signed by Nigeria in June, is “nothing but a vital legal framework for cooperation between the OACPS and the European Union, to promote sustainable development, fight climate change and its effects, generate investment opportunities, and foster collaboration among OACPS Member States at the international stage.”
Mohammed said Nigeria has “an existing legislation against same-sex relationships” and, contrary to reports, the Samoa Agreement does not invalidate any of Nigeria’s laws.
