Member of Parliament for South West St. Elizabeth, Floyd Green, says the southern belt of the parish has been significantly impacted by Hurricane Beryl.
Aerial footage seen by our news centre shows several houses and business places in and around the towns of Junction and Treasure Beach with extensive damage to the roofs.
Power lines have been downed and many roads, stretching from Junction to Black River, are impassable.
Daina Davy reports.
On Wednesday at about 5PM, the eyewall of Hurricane Beryl was located south of Alligator Pond.
The Met Service informed that this would result in continuous impact to southern parishes, including St. Elizabeth, Manchester and Clarendon.
That impact was in the form of heavy rains and strong winds for about 6-to-12 hours.
Beryl leaves south St. Elizabeth in bad shape, with damage to infrastructure, businesses and homes in the bread basket parish.
South West St. Elizabeth MP, Floyd Green says early assessments in some communities suggest that between 60 and 70 percent of houses were severely impacted.
He says the impact in South East St. Elizabeth is similar.
He says houses in Bull Savanah, Top Hill and Southfield have been damaged, with people having to spend the night on their verandahs or at their neighbours’ house.
Mr. Green says both major and interior roads are blocked.
Educational infrastructure in the parish has also been impacted.
Images of the renowned all-boys institution Munro College show damage to several buildings.
Meanwhile, Minister Green, who’s in charge of the agriculture and fisheries portfolio says preliminary reports indicate that the sector suffered significant blow.
He says the Rural Agricultural Development Authority will begin its assessments on Thursday.
