Among presided over the first sitting of the fourth session of parliament on 6 June 2024.
A TikTok video claiming Anita Among, the Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, has resigned is FALSE.
The 10-second video features an image of Among and the text, “Anita Annet Among has resigned as speaker of Parliament Uganda. Breaking news.”
The video was shared on 2 May 2024 amidst calls on social and mainstream media demanding Among’s resignation over corruption allegations and sanctions.
However, as of 7 June 2024, Among was still the Speaker. On 6 June 2024, Among presided over the first meeting of the fourth session of parliament, during which President Yoweri Museveni delivered the State of the Nation Address.
A keyword search to investigate the authenticity of the information did not yield any results confirming the alleged resignation. Also, according to Article 82 (7) of the Ugandan constitution, a Speaker resigns by writing to the clerk of parliament.
In addition, Among has been updating the public on the work and events she has been presiding over as Speaker.
When contacted, Chris Obore, the director communication and public affairs at parliament, termed this propaganda.
“That is fake propaganda. The Speaker continues performing her duties, serving the country in that position,” Obore said by telephone.
