Term limits were erased from the constitution in 2005.
A TikTok video claiming Uganda reintroduced presidential term limits in 2018 is FALSE.
The 3-minute 14-second video in Luganda starts with an individual saying that many people do not know that the 2021–2026 term is President Yoweri Museveni’s last term in office.
The title of the video reads, “Obadde okimanyi nti ekomo ku kisanja ky’obwa Pulezidenti bya Uganda yakomezaawo mu 2018 naye bangi tebamanyi?” This translates to, “Did you know presidential term limits were reintroduced in Uganda in 2018 but many don’t know?”
The individual further asks someone to project the amendments to the constitution that reintroduced the term limits on the screen.
They then read it out adding that Ugandans do not know about it because the provision about term limits is “small”.
However, Article 105 (2), which provided for only two presidential terms, was scrapped in the 2005 constitutional amendments.
Here is the amendment.
The development was reported by mainstream media, as seen here, here and here.
Again, in 2017, not 2018, Parliament amended the constitution and, among other things, scrapped the presidential age limit, which then prohibited anyone younger than 35 or above 75 from contesting or serving as president.
PesaCheck looked into a video on TikTok claiming that the constitution of Uganda was amended and presidential term limits reintroduced in 2018 and found it to be FALSE.
