Chief Technical Director in the Ministry of National Security, Delroy Simpson, says the government is investing $10 billion into the construction of the new Specialised Operations West facility.
The facility will be built in Montego Hills, St. James as part of the government’s multifaceted and sustained response to crime.
Mahiri Stewart reports.
Mr. Simpson, while speaking at the 10th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference in Montego Bay, St. James on Monday, noted that the facility was one of three being built across the country.
Mr. Simpson says the cumulative investment in the institutional build-out of the JCF stands at over $19 billion. He says as part of that build-out, the government did an islandwide assessment of police stations in 2018.
It revealed that 150 of the 213 police stations were in an advanced state of disrepair. Fifteen were also irreparable.
The chief technical director says in response, the national security ministry launched Project Work. Mr. Simpson says it has so far resulted in the completion of over 100 major renovation projects.
And Mr. Simpson says the government has also invested heavily in the digital capacity of the JCF, with over 1,000 cameras installed under the JamaicaEye surveillance system.
