The
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is reportedly closing in on
Belgian trainer Marc Brys to assume the role of Super Eagles’ new
manager following the resignation of Finidi George last
Saturday.
Finidi, 53, resigned following poor results at the helm, after
failing to secure a win in either of Nigeria’s two crucial World
Cup qualifiers in June, drawing with South Africa at home and
losing to Benin away.
The results further jeopardised Nigeria’s chances of qualifying
for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the three-time African champions
yet to win in four games and accumulating only three points in the
process.
Despite Brys’ position as the head coach of the Indomitable
Lions of Cameroon, Belgian publication Het
Nieuwsblad reports that the 62-year-old has been sounded out by
the NFF for the vacant position.
Strained relations with Eto’o could
see Brys take over Super Eagles
Marc Brys’ strained relationship with Samuel Eto’o could be a
significant factor in his potential move to the Super Eagles.
Appointed by Cameroon’s sports ministry without the approval of
FECAFOOT, Brys’ tenure as the Indomitable Lions’ coach began
contentiously. Eto’o, the Federation president, did not initially
recognise Brys as the coach, leading to heightened tension and a
heated exchange between the two.
This conflict saw Brys temporarily replaced by Martin Ndtoungou
in May. The impasse was eventually resolved, and Brys was reinstated.
Brys recently led Cameroon to a win against Cape Verde and a
draw in Angola during World Cup qualifiers, placing the Indomitable
Lions at the top of Group D with 8 points.
However, the lingering tension with Eto’o may prompt Brys to
consider a new challenge with
Nigeria’s Super Eagles, where his expertise could be welcomed
without the backdrop of internal conflict.
What you need to know about Marc Brys’
managerial career
Marc Brys began his coaching journey at Berchem Sport, leading
them to championships in the Belgian fourth and third
divisions.
Since then, he has mostly enjoyed a modest mid-table career in
his home country, as well as in the Netherlands, before a brief
spell managing in Saudi Arabia.
He was without a job before taking up the Cameroon job in April
2024.
