Former National Commercial Bank, NCB, employee, Khadene Thomas, who pleaded guilty to stealing more than $74 million from customer accounts at the bank, is to return to court for sentencing later this month.
Thomas, who worked at NCB’s St Ann’s Bay branch, was to be sentenced in the St Ann Parish Court on Wednesday.
However, when it was revealed that Thomas did not have the money required to repay the bank, Parish Court Judge Lorna Montague Williams postponed the sentencing until June 27.
The postponement gives Thomas an additional two weeks to come up with the money.
Thomas’ lawyer, Matthew Hyatt, told the judge that Thomas only had one-hundred-thousand of the 4-hundred-thousand US dollars she is to return to the bank.
He said she needs time to get the balance.
Thomas admitted in court in February that she stole the equivalent of more than 74 million dollars.
It was revealed in court that Thomas forged clients’ signatures and transferred money to several accounts including her own, over a two-year period.
She pleaded guilty to three counts of larceny as a servant and 31 counts of uttering forged documents.
Mr Hyatt told reporters at the courthouse Wednesday that his client hoped to make full restitution.
He said he was asking the court for a suspended sentence.
