President of the Jamaica Teacher’s Association, JTA, Leighton Johnson, says the Ministry of Education wasted millions of dollars by purchasing resources that were not needed by the country’s teachers.
This comes after Permanent Secretary Dr. Kasan Troupe, lamented that teachers were underutilizing teaching resources provided by the ministry.
Mahiri Stewart has that story.
While addressing a sensitization session for teachers at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, in Rose Hall, St. James, last week, Dr. Troupe revealed that the ministry was not getting a meaningful return on its investments in the teaching and learning process.
She says teachers were not making proper use of the resources the ministry spent billions on acquiring.
However, the JTA’s President says the full story is not being told.
Speaking Tuesday on Cliff Hughes Online, Mr. Johnson cited poor internet connections in schools as one of the key reasons teachers are unable to utilize the resources.
Dr. Troupe says 40,000 Microsoft 365 licences worth $89 million were purchased for the sector.
Mr. Johnson says this was an area in which the ministry overspent.
The JTA President says the association is yearning for a reality where teachers are given the opportunity to advise the Ministry on where they should allocate funds.
