Operational Updates
- Food assistance during emergencies: WFP assisted 127,700 refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs) and vulnerable host populations, distributing 685 mt of food and US$ 225,844 as cash transfers.
- Malnutrition prevention and management of moderate acute malnutrition (MAM): WFP continued nutrition screenings for children aged 6 to 59 months, while 130 mt of specialised nutritious foods (SNFs) were distributed to about 33,960 people. The beneficiaries included about 25,700 children aged 6-59 months (16,300 children enrolled in MAM management), 7,900 pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls (PBW/G) and almost 240 anti-retro viral (ART) clients.
- School feeding: Home-grown school feeding activities continued in the East and Far North regions. WFP provided 6,800 schoolchildren with nutritious porridge and locally produced and processed meals during school recess.
- Resilience building activities: WFP commenced resilience activities in the East and Southwest regions with participants involved in feeder road rehabilitation, market gardening, composting, farmer field schools with fortified cassava and maize planted. WFP supported 11,100 participants with US$ 38,400 and 122 mt of food. WFP also facilitated the creation of 29 village savings and loans associations (VSLAs) in the Northwest and Southwest as a step towards improving the financial status of families participating in resilience building activities.
- Cold Chain: WFP completed the final mile deliveries of almost 100,000 doses of various vaccines and 150 boxes of ancillaries to the Far North, East, North, and Adamawa Regions, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Africa CDC. Concurrently WFP completed training of officials of the Ministry of Health on thermo-sensitive logistics (TSL) and Quality Management Systems (QMS).
- Sudan support: From the onset of the crisis until the end of April 2024, the Global Commodity Management Facility (GCMF) dispatched a total of 24,159 mt of assorted food commodities to Chad for scheduled distributions to Sudanese refugees, comprising sorghum, rice, vegetable oil, pulses, fortified cereal, and specialized nutritious foods.
