Highlights:
- Two districts in Malawi, Nkhotakota and Karonga, experienced prolonged heavy rains that caused flooding of several rivers in many locations in March 2024. 10,529 people (2,340 households) were displaced by floods in Nkhotakota and 4,555 people in Karonga district. 10,529 people were rendered homeless and sheltered in 12 camps in Nkhotakota and 516 across five camps in Karonga district.
- Following the impact of the El Niño-induced prolonged dry spells and floods on crop production and other sectors, His Excellency Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera declared a state of disaster in 23 districts and appealed for local and international assistance.
- By April 2024, UNICEF had supported 12,000 people by providing health supplies and reached 6,120 women, children and lactating mothers with essential primary health services through integrated mobile clinics.
- 9000 people with critical WASH supplies in Nkhotakota and Karonga, and UNICEF through partners supporting the delivery of supplies and promoting hygiene.
