The House of Representatives has strongly supported a bill to revert to the old national anthem, Nigeria, We Hail Thee, which passed the second reading in the Senate.
Lawmakers believe the old anthem evokes a stronger emotional bond among Nigerians than the current anthem Arise, O Compatriots introduced during a military regime. The old national was used from Independence Day, October 1, 1960, and was abandoned in 1978.
However, some lawmakers, oppose the change, arguing that the old anthem is colonial and the move distracts from more pressing national issues.
