Chairman of the Free National Movement in The Bahamas, Don Saunders, was shot and killed Wednesday night during an armed robbery outside a club in Gambier Village.
Saunders was former MP and deputy speaker of the House of Assembly. His murder has sent shock waves throughout the country.
Eyewitness reports are that two armed masked men men entered the club and demanded cash from patrons at the bar.
The patrons reportedly panicked and everybody ran in different directions. Shots were fired.
After a while, the patrons realised Saunders was not with them. They discovered his body a short time later.
Police Commissioner Clayton Fernander said when police arrived on the scene shortly after 9 pm, they found Saunders’ body lying face down on the ground.
The commissioner appealed to the public to come forward with information on the shooting.
Opposition Leader Michael Pintard and former Prime Minister, Dr. Hubert Minnis, were among those who visited the on the scene.
As police processed the scene, relatives and friends grieved.
Saunders’ son, Donald Saunders Jr, was among those on the scene.
He is among the Bahamian swimmers selected to represent the country in the open water competition of the Carifta Games in New Providence next week.
Saunders’ wife, Tiffany, was also on the scene.
This is the 35th murder in The Bahamas since the start of the year.
