The People’s National Party is urging the Holness-led administration to take decisive action to protect the ecologically sensitive Mammee Bay area in St. Ann from any disturbance.
This follows a proposed development of a luxury housing complex in Ocho Rios by the China Harbour Engineering Company, CHEC.
The development is set to provide housing for over 4,000 people on over 100 acres of land on the Roaring River/ Mammee Bay Estate.
The public meeting held last week in St. Ann, marks a crucial juncture in the ongoing efforts to protect the vital ecological heritage of the Mammee Bay area.
In a release on Friday, Shadow Minister of Environment and Ecological Heritage, Senator Sophia Frazer-Binns emphasises the need for responsible and sustainable development that prioritises the preservation of the country’s natural resources.
She adds that the proposed development will impact critical watersheds for ecologically sensitive areas such as Dunn’s River, Roaring River, Bogue, Mammee Bay and surrounding communities in Ocho Rios.
Senator Frazer-Binns is calling on the prime minister to provide alternate lands for development.
She further states that any development of lands in the ecologically sensitive region must be approached with utmost caution and consideration for the long-term impact on the environment.
