Hearing Against Michael Saba Postponed; Haiti’s Security Worsens
The Permanent Attention Office of the National District in the Dominican Republic has postponed the hearing to decide on the coercive measures against Michael Saba until next Wednesday. Saba, an Italian-Colombian, is accused of murdering and dismembering a Venezuelan woman in Piantini, an affluent area. The case has been under the spotlight due to the severity of the events and the nationality of the victim.
Unfolding of the Case
Michael Saba’s defense attorney, Carlos Nova, finds himself at the center of attention following the murder investigations of Yenny Carolina Pérez Canelón. The 27-year-old victim’s body was found dismembered, adding a shocking element to the case. According to Nova, his client, Saba, has not pleaded guilty.
Worsening Security Situation in Haiti
In a separate but related development, the director of the Police Academy of Haiti, Rigaud Harington, was killed by armed men on the Freres road in the commune of Petion-ville. The attackers fled in the police car the commissioner was traveling in. Haiti is witnessing an unprecedented deterioration of security, with gang wars, armed attacks, kidnappings, robberies, and rapes on the rise.
Between January and September 2022, 17 officers died on duty and sixteen were suspended pending investigations. The ratio of police officers per 1,000 inhabitants in Haiti is 1.06, which falls below the international norm of 2.2 per 1,000 inhabitants. As of September this year, more than 14,100 officials were registered, including 1,567 women.
