“Essequibo existed long before there was a Venezuela!”
That’s the word from Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs of Guyana, Mohabir Nandlall.
Minister Nandlall was speaking on Tuesday at the Vice Chancellor’s Forum put on by the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies.
The forum, held under theme “Guarding Sovereignty”, saw a panel examine the the political and legal issues surrounding the controversy regarding the dispute over ownership of the Essequibo territory.
This follows a ruling by the International Court of Justice, ICJ, on December 1 that prohibited Venezuela from doing anything to interfere with Guyana’s claim to the region.
Minister Nandlall says the actions of Venezuela’s president, Nicolas Maduro since the ICJ’s ruling, reek of desperation.

Meanwhile, Guyana’s former ambassador to the United States, Riyad Insanally says President Maduro’s calls for Guyana to de-escalate tensions is unwarranted.
He says the Venezuelan regime are the source of the tensions.
