The Faculty of Law at the Mona Campus of the UWI, has extended an invitation to President of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, JCPC, Lord Reed to address a public forum at the institution by February next year.
The invitation follows Lord Reed’s intervention in the ongoing debate over whether Jamaica should cut ties with the Privy Council as its final court of appeal.
Lord Reed wrote a letter to the Gleaner newspaper, in which he attempted to debunk a long held belief about the Privy Council’s attitude towards Jamaica and the issue of access to the London based court.
We have more in this report from Shaloy Smikle.
Lord Reed’s letter was published by the Gleaner last Thursday.
It sparked reaction from eminent attorneys including King’s Counsels and from a former Prime Minister, PJ Patterson, himself a King’s Counsel.
Lord Reed’s basic argument was that the Privy Council sees it as a privilege to serve the Jamaican people and is happy doing so.
Interim Dean at the Faculty of Law at the UWI, Dr. Christopher Malcolm says it’s only right to invite Lord Reed to engage in an expansive discourse.
According to Dr Malcolm, there are several issues that require in-depth clarification as it relates to the future of the country’s final appellate court.
