Three Gold Medal winners from the 2023 Budapest World Championships are among 11 nominees vying for the RJR/GLEANER Sports Foundation Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year award.
The list of nominees were announced this morning.
200m World Champion Shericka Jackson who also won the Diamond League 100 and 200m titles, heads the field of five for sportswoman of the year.
Jackson is joined by last year’s winner Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, National Netball captain Jhaniele Fowler, 100m Hurdles world champion Danielle Williams and World championship Bronze medallist Rushelle Clayton.
Jamaica’s first men’s 400m champion in 40 years Antonio Watson leads the six men nominated for the award. The others are World Championship Silver medallist Hansle Parchment, Race car driver Fraser McConnell, Jaheel Hyde, Wayne Pinnock and Tajay Gayle.
Meanwhile Jackson, Williams and Watson have also been nominated in the category for the People’s Choice award.
All three were nominated on the strength of their gold medal winning performances in Budapest and they are joined in the category by Reggae girl Drew Spence for her brilliant free kick against Canada in the second leg of their Olympic Games qualifier in Toronto in October and Reggae boy Shamar Nicholson for his first goal against Canada in the second leg of the Nations League quarterfinal in Toronto.
The 2023 awards will take place on Friday January 19 at the Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston.
