Santa and Mrs. Claus came to town Friday night and were greeted by a crush of people lined up on the Public Square and crowded onto the northwest quadrant. They were all waiting to get that first glimpse of the Clauses or to share some time with him in Sutton’s 160 Event Center, which hosted Santa’s and Mrs. Claus’ first visit to Angola. Observers in the downtown said this year’s crowd was as large as any, and Mrs. Claus reported to KPC Media after the event that they stayed well past their scheduled 9 p.m. quitting time. Meanwhile, this year, after the traditional greetings exchanged between Mayor Richard Hickman and Santa, the Jolly Old Elf proclaimed that Angola’s top elected official would become the top elf at the North Pole upon his retirement. Hickman did not run for a sixth elected term in office. His final day will be Dec. 31. The Clauses are expected to attend many other events throughout the holiday season, including the Angola Area Chamber of Commerce’s Winter Wonderland event on Dec. 9 in Central Gym.
